Indet Gnathosaurine

Description

The preserved part of the crown is distally recurved with a height of c. 4.2 mm and a dorsoventral width of 0.9 mm. The base of the tooth is somewhat dorsoventrally compressed and oval in cross-section. The apex of the crown, which is also oval in cross-section, is rotated so that what would have been the distal surface, absent rotation, lies in a dorsal position

Enamel covers the apical half of the preserved part of the crown but its basal extent is variable. Dorsally the enamel has been breached for c. three quarters of the distance from the apex to its basal extremity. The facet is polished and bears a number of fine, parallel, linear scratches lying at an acute angle mesiodorsally to the apicobasal axis of the enamelled part of the crown

The mesial and distal margins of the enamelled part of the tooth comprise narrow dorsally raised ridges. The ridge on the distal margin is more robust than that on the mesial margin.

Classification

Pterosauria,
Pterodactyloidea.
Ornithocheiridae Seeley, 1870.

“Ornithocheirus” sp

Description

Ornithocheirus has been regarded for many years as a “waste-basket” genus, with any fragmentary pterosaur material being included, so descriptions are not of much use, however, Ornithocheirus can be recognised by the occasional crest, which is preserved on the maxilla and/or premaxilla, and the teeth are well spaced and thin.
